Corning, NY - Local jewelry artist and business owner Ann Recotta has been accepted into the prestigious 2014 Battle of the Beads competition. This international competition, which was organized and sponsored by The Beadsmith, only accepted 256 contestants.
"I was thrilled when I found out I had been accepted into the contest," Recotta said. "The field of contestants includes some of the biggest names in the beading world."
The contestants are separated into four brackets of 64 artists. They square off against each other in single-elimination, one-on-one matches judged by past and present contestants as well as the public. More weight is given to the contestants' votes. The ultimate winner will be announced by the end of summer. Recotta's first round opponent is a jewelry artist from the Ukraine. There's no prize for winning the Battle of the Beads. Recotta said receiving recognition from her fellow artists is more than worth the hours of hard work she put into her piece.
For the competition, Recotta created a Victorian choker with a teardrop shaped focal. Her piece included imported Czech beads, pearls, crystals and hand-dyed, pleated silk ribbon. She used dark tones like midnight blue, black and dark greens. The title of her piece is "Livin' After Midnight."
"My pieces are full of texture and depth," Recotta said. "I create pieces to make you look closer, into every space and line, like a treasure hunt. People love that they're wearing art. It's like carrying a bit of inspiration around with you all day."
Recotta has been the owner of Soulshine Studio since 2011. Located at 26 East Market St., Recotta offers on-one and group lessons and parties. She also sells her own jewelry as well as kits for every skill level.
Coleen Fabrizi, Executive Director for Corning's Gaffer District commented, "Ann is an amazing artist and an excellent teacher. Anyone participating in a class at Soulshine Studio can walk away with a beautiful creation they have made under her thoughtful guidance and score another memorable experience in our downtown. We are very excited to see her continue through the competition!"
